Dear Parent(s) and Stakeholders,
The San Juan School District Board of Education members are seeking information to help best serve its patrons. As a consequence of the Covid19 Pandemic, it was necessary to suspend the practice of rotating board meeting locations from school to school within the county and hold them in one location (the Boardroom at the District Office in Blanding) and broadcast them virtually to parents and stakeholders. A modern, efficient broadcast system has been purchased and installed in the Board Room in the District Office in Blanding. This system was purchased using ESSER Care funds to help facilitate effective public participation into the virtual board meetings. A rise in participation of patrons resulted. In the past five months, the lowest number of viewers has been 60 with the highest being over a 100. These numbers are substantially higher than participation numbers in meetings prior to the Pandemic.
Now with the Pandemic subsiding to some degree, the Board of Education is seeking some input regarding the best way to provide stakeholder access to board meetings in the future. Should board meetings return to a rotation of in-person meetings at schools where broadcasting effectiveness is less than ideal due to many factors, or should board meetings remain in the Board Room in Blanding and be broadcasted virtually to patrons utilizing the modern, effective system? The Board of Education is asking you to provide your input into the decision by completing the attached survey. Thank you so much for your valuable time.

Attention SJSD Parents, Students, and Stakeholders,
On Monday August 15th, all San Juan School District schools and district office will be closed all day. SJSD staff will be attending a valuable training day to help them be ready to kick off another successful year. The focus of this training day will be to unite our district staff into one strong team and to remind teachers/staff of the critical role they each play in positively shaping the lives of our youth.
I appreciate your patience and understanding and apologize for any inconvenience caused by this change. Schools will reopen on Tuesday August 16th, and we look forward to seeing you then.
Sincerely,
Superintendent Ron Nielson
It’s Teacher Appreciation Week! Thank you to our teachers and staff for helping make this year successful. Thank your teacher(s) today!
Parents, in the March 9th, SJSD board meeting, the SJSD Board of Education will be discussing school fees and spend plans for the 2022-2023 school year. These proposed fees and spend plans must be available at least twice for public input and must be officially approved before April 1st. This is the third opportunity for public input and the last opportunity to be approved before April 1st. These fees are included in the agenda which can be viewed by going to the district website. (www.sjsd.org) Anyone wishing to make a comment regarding the proposed fee schedule, can do so in next Wednesday Board Meeting either in person or virtually. Your input is greatly valued.
Notice: Due to COVID precautions and the Navajo Nation remaining in the 'RED" status, the March SJSD Board Meeting, previously scheduled for March 9th at Monument Valley High School, will be held at the District Office in Blanding Utah, and broadcasted to the public. A link to stream the meeting will be available early next week on the district website . Thank You
Dear Parent and Public,
Our number one goal is to ensure that students and staff have a safe and welcoming environment that promotes learning, and at this time I am happy to report that students and staff of San Juan School District are safe. Yesterday afternoon, a threatening comment was received at one our schools. Then, latter in the evening a suspicious device appearing to be some type of home-made explosives was found at a second SJSD school. The San Juan County Sherriff’s Department along with the Navajo Nation Police responded and determined it to be non-functional as an explosive device but still dangerous in nature. These incidents added to the recent activity on TikTok and our commitment to ensure the continued safety of students and staff, the decision to was made that Friday December 17th would be a virtual day of instruction for all students. This will allow time for further investigation. I thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to work through this situation. We do believe these incidents are related to the TikTok challenge. We plan on students returning to face-to-face instruction Monday, Dec 20th. Should anything come to light in our ongoing investigation to require a change of plan, we will again reach out to inform parents and public. Again, thank you for your patience and understanding as we look further into these incidents.
Sincerely,
Ron Nielson
