Non-Emergency

The Navajo Division of Public Safety has announced two new non-emergency phone numbers as part of an effort to improve addressing and emergency communications across the Navajo Nation.

San Juan School District is sharing both numbers so families can save the number serving their community. The numbers became operational Oct. 9, 2026.

Eastern Regional Communications Center, Shiprock, New Mexico

(505) 354-5210

Serving the Shiprock, Crownpoint and Window Rock Navajo Police Department districts.

Western Regional Communications Center, Kayenta, Arizona

(928) 489-5160

Serving the Kayenta, Chinle, Tuba City and Dilkon Navajo Police Department districts.

For emergencies, continue to call 911. Existing police district non-emergency numbers will remain operational for a period during the transition.

Helping responders find rural homes

The phone changes are part of Address Navajo, a project that combines rural addressing, digital mapping and upgrades to 911 technology.

Field crews are collecting location information and developing unique addresses for rural properties. The goal is to help police, firefighters and emergency medical responders locate homes more quickly and accurately. Improved addressing can also help delivery drivers find properties.

As of June 2026, the project reported collecting more than 73,000 address points and traveling more than 200,000 vehicle miles.

The project says it conducts outreach with chapters before addressing work begins. Field crews include at least one Navajo Nation community member who can answer questions and receive feedback in Navajo.

Updating emergency communications

The Navajo Nation is also transitioning from seven dispatch locations to two regional communications centers in Shiprock and Kayenta, according to the Division of Public Safety’s announcement.

Address Navajo includes work toward Next Generation 911, a system designed to provide better caller location information and support communication through text messages, photos and videos. These are capabilities of the planned system, rather than confirmation that every feature is currently available across the Navajo Nation.

Families are encouraged to save the appropriate non-emergency number and share it with relatives and neighbors.
